Gargoyles Returns: Greg Weisman Launches New Ongoing Series 30 Years in the Making
Dynamite Entertainment is ushering in a bold new chapter for the beloved Gargoyles franchise this August, launching a brand-new ongoing comic series that continues the acclaimed continuity crafted by franchise creator Greg Weisman — while also offering an ideal entry point for new readers.
Set in the rich mythology that first captivated fans in the 1990s animated series, the new Gargoyles #1 revisits the legendary warriors who were cursed to sleep in stone for a thousand years before awakening in modern-day Manhattan.
“One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear. It was the age of GARGOYLES!” the series synopsis reads. “Stone by day, warriors by night, they were betrayed by the humans they had sworn to protect... frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. Now, here in Manhattan, the spell is broken, and they live again! They are defenders of the night! They are Gargoyles!”
The upcoming series is designed for everyone — from longtime devotees who have followed every chapter of the franchise’s animated and comic-book history to newcomers discovering the Manhattan Clan for the first time.
“For me, this is a story thirty years in the making. One I've been longing to tell,” said writer Greg Weisman. “So longtime fans are seriously not going to want to miss this. At the same time, it's also a great place for new readers who know nothing about Gargoyles to jump aboard. We're making sure that everything you need to know is right there on the page. Your Gargoyles addiction begins here and now!”
Chronologically, the saga now moves into the pivotal year of 1997, embracing the high-energy spirit and storytelling style that defined 1990s animation. At the center of the new storyline is “Egwardo,” a rare Gargoyle egg guarded by the Manhattan Clan — until it’s stolen by the clan’s longtime enemy, Demona.
As the Gargoyles race to recover the egg, they’ll also face an ancient and devastating evil bent on global destruction, setting the stage for a high-stakes adventure that Dynamite promises will unfold month after month.
The new era also introduces artist Gerardo Gambone as Weisman’s latest creative collaborator, joining a legacy of acclaimed Gargoyles illustrators that includes George Kambadais, Drew Moss, Ciro Cangialosi, Pasquale Qualano, Frank Paur, and Tad Stones. The creative team also features colorist Robby Bevard and letterer Jeff Eckleberry.
Behind the scenes, editor Nate Cosby has assembled a powerhouse lineup of cover artists, including Meghan Hetrick, Sebastian Piriz, Drew Moss, and Frank Paur, to bring the fan-favorite characters to life with striking new artwork.
“Welcome to the first new ONGOING GARGOYLES SERIES in years!” Cosby said. “It’s a new day (night?) for our heroes. New characters, new stakes, new adventures! If you’ve ever been Gargoyles-curious, THIS is the perfect jumping-on point to be introduced to the Manhattan Clan. And if you’re a Day One fan, Greg Weisman’s got you…he's beautifully threading centuries of Gargoyles lore through this new tale, and grounding the emotional stakes for Goliath and all of his brethren!”
Fans can also check with their local comic shops about premium mystery blind bags, which will include three copies of the issue alongside exclusive collectible cover variants, including foil, lineart, and metal editions.
