Jae Lee’s Hellshock Returns: Dynamite Brings Back a 90s Icon With Big Plans Ahead

Dynamite Entertainment has officially acquired all rights to Hellshock, the haunting supernatural comic series from legendary creator Jae Lee.

Originally released in 1994 during the early days of Image Comics, Hellshock became a cult favorite known for its intense visual style, spiritual themes, and deeply personal storytelling. Now, three decades later, the series is preparing for a major comeback, with Dynamite set to reprint the original books in 2026 to coincide with the title’s 30th anniversary—and much more beyond that.

A STORY BORN FROM ANGELS, MADNESS, AND THE 90S CREATIVE BOOM
At the heart of Hellshock is a mysterious figure named Daniel—a Nephilim, born of both angelic and human blood—trapped between celestial warfare and earthly trauma. Through Daniel’s journey, Jae Lee explored themes of identity, grief, and faith, set against a backdrop of surrealist horror and mythic stakes. The comic gained attention not just for its storytelling, but for Lee’s raw, stylized artwork, which broke visual conventions and helped define a visual era of comics.

Released during the explosive rise of creator-owned comics, Hellshock stood out as one of the first Image titles not created by the original founders. Lee, already known for his work on Namor, X-Factor, and Youngblood Strikefile, poured his heart and soul into Hellshock, making it a signature work that pushed his creative boundaries in every way.

DYNAMITE AND JAE LEE: A LONGTIME COLLABORATION REIGNITED
For Dynamite CEO and Publisher Nick Barrucci, this acquisition is more than just a new title on the shelf—it’s personal. Barrucci and Lee have worked together for over 20 years, dating back to early projects with Dynamic Forces. Since then, Lee has contributed hundreds of covers to Dynamite’s top franchises, from pulp heroes to pop culture icons. Their creative bond—and friendship—goes way back.

“Hellshock remains the most important work of my career,” Lee says. “It’s where I grew up creatively. It’s where I reached further than I thought I could. And Nick has been there from the beginning. There’s no better place for Hellshock now than Dynamite.”

Barrucci agrees, calling Hellshock one of the most meaningful projects Dynamite has taken on.

“Jae Lee is one of the most visionary artists in comics, and Hellshock is a deeply personal masterpiece. We’re honored to help bring it back to life—not just in print, but potentially in other forms of media as well.”

MORE THAN JUST REPRINTS: A FUTURE BEYOND THE PAGE
While the first step will be restoring the original comics for a new audience—likely in remastered editions with fresh commentary and extras—Dynamite’s vision for Hellshock goes far beyond the page. With full media rights secured, the company is exploring potential film, TV, and video game adaptations. The blend of theological horror, psychological depth, and striking visual language makes Hellshock a perfect candidate for a modern genre audience.

To support this expansion, Dynamite is teaming up with high-profile industry partners, including Charles Ferraro at United Talent Agency, Ford Gilmore of Illuminati Entertainment, and IP attorney Michael Lovitz.

WHY HELLSHOCK STILL MATTERS TODAY
In an industry now flooded with reboots and shared universes, Hellshock offers something different: a raw, emotional story from a time when creator-owned comics were just beginning to challenge the mainstream. It’s not just a nostalgia play—it’s a return to an era when comics could be weird, personal, and unfiltered.

And with Jae Lee back in the fold, personally overseeing this new chapter, fans can expect something special.

“Hellshock was my 90s baby,” Lee says. “Now he’s all grown up. I can’t wait to see where he goes next.”
